I Know It’s Only September… But It’s Never Too Early to Start Prepping for Christmas 🎄💕

A pink shopping cart filled with festive holiday gifts, wrapping paper, a Starbucks cup, and a sign that says 'Holiday Helper' adorned with flowers and ribbons.

I know. It’s September. 🍂

We’re just pulling out the pumpkins, ordering pumpkin spice everything, and thinking about Halloween costumes.

But hear me out…

Christmas is coming. 🎄

And if you’re a mom, you already know how quickly the weeks between September and December disappear.

One minute you’re enjoying the first cool fall weekend, and the next you’re trying to remember whether you bought a teacher gift, where you hid the stocking stuffers, what you’re bringing to Christmas dinner, and whether that ONE toy your child desperately wants is still available anywhere on the internet. 😅

That’s why I’m a big believer in starting early.

Not because we need to rush through fall or have the Christmas tree up in September—but because doing a little now can save you a whole lot of stress later.

🎄 Christmas Doesn’t Have to Be a December Emergency

Think about everything moms are usually juggling during the holiday season:

Christmas shopping. 🎁
Stocking stuffers.
Teacher gifts.
Family gifts.
Christmas cards.
Decorating.
Wrapping.
Baking.
School parties.
Work parties.
Elf activities.
Holiday meals.
Travel plans.
Family gatherings.
Matching pajamas.
And approximately 47 other things we forgot were happening. 😂

It’s a lot.

So instead of waiting until December to tackle everything at once, start chipping away at the list now.

Your December self will thank you. 💕

🎁 1. Start Your Christmas Gift List Now

Open the Notes app on your phone and create one master Christmas list.

Write down everyone you typically shop for:

Kids
Spouse or partner
Parents
Grandparents
Nieces and nephews
Teachers
Coaches
Friends
Coworkers
Neighbors
Secret Santa exchanges

Then start adding gift ideas whenever you hear them.

If your child randomly says, “OMG, I want that!” while you’re shopping?

Put it on the list.

If Grandma mentions something she’d love?

Put it on the list.

You don’t necessarily have to buy everything today. You’re simply eliminating the December question:

“What in the world am I going to get everyone?”

🛍️ 2. Start Buying the Viral and Hard-to-Find Gifts

This is one area where I wouldn’t wait too long.

Every Christmas has those products.

The toy everyone wants.

The collectible suddenly all over social media.

The beauty product every tween has on their Christmas list.

The viral gadget.

The limited-edition item.

The thing you saw everywhere in September that somehow disappears from every store by December 10. 😭

If your child has a must-have item that you already know they want, consider buying it while it’s readily available—especially if you find it at a good price.

You can always wait on the socks.

Don’t wait on THE toy. 😂🎁

And keep an eye on what your kids, tweens, and teens are talking about now. Their current obsessions can give you a huge head start on Christmas shopping.

💰 3. Spread Out the Christmas Spending

Starting early isn’t only about saving time.

It can also make Christmas easier on your budget.

Instead of buying everything during a few frantic weeks in November and December, you can spread purchases across several months.

Maybe you buy a couple of gifts in September.

A few more in October.

Then finish during the November sales.

It feels a lot less overwhelming than one giant pile of Christmas expenses hitting at once.

Just remember where you hide everything. 😂

Pro mom tip: Add a note to your phone telling yourself where you’ve hidden the gifts.

Seriously.

🏷️ 4. Watch for Deals Before Black Friday

You don’t necessarily have to wait until Black Friday to start shopping.

If something on your list goes on sale now and you’re comfortable with the price, check it off your list.

Also pay attention to:

✨ Clearance sections
✨ Seasonal sales
✨ Store coupons
✨ Rewards points
✨ Free shipping promotions
✨ Buy-one-get-one deals
✨ Early holiday promotions

The goal isn’t to buy something simply because it’s on sale.

The goal is to save money on something you were already planning to buy.

There’s a difference. 💕

🎅 5. Don’t Forget the Little Things

It’s amazing how quickly all the “little” Christmas purchases add up.

Start collecting things like:

Stocking stuffers
Gift bags
Tissue paper
Tape
Gift tags
Wrapping paper
Batteries
Christmas cards
Teacher gifts
Hostess gifts
Small gift cards
Secret Santa gifts

Grab one or two things when you’re already out shopping.

By December, you’ll have your own little Christmas supply station instead of making an emergency Target run because you ran out of tape at 10 PM. 🎀😂

Grab the Holiday Helper Elf Kit featuring the Grinch early and have one less thing to worry about when December arrives! 🎄🧝💚✨

🎀 6. Create a Gift-Wrapping Station

This is one of my favorite holiday sanity savers.

Choose one area of your house and keep your Christmas wrapping supplies together.

It doesn’t have to be Pinterest-perfect.

A tote works.

Keep your wrapping paper, scissors, tape, bows, ribbon, tissue paper, gift bags, and tags together.

Then try wrapping gifts as you buy them.

Even if you wrap only a few each week, that’s a few less you’ll be wrapping at midnight three days before Christmas.

🧝 7. Moms of Elf Kids—Start Planning NOW

You know what I’m talking about. 😂

December 1st seems very far away until suddenly you’re lying in bed at 11:47 PM and remember…

THE ELF.

If your family does Elf on the Shelf, start saving ideas now.

Create a folder on your phone and screenshot ideas when you see them.

You can also start picking up inexpensive props and supplies.

Future exhausted December-you will be extremely grateful.

🍪 8. Think Beyond Presents

Christmas preparation isn’t just shopping.

Start thinking about the other things that make December busy.

What meals will you make?

Are you hosting anyone?

Will you travel?

Are there school events?

Family photos?

Christmas cards?

Cookie exchanges?

Holiday parties?

Christmas morning breakfast?

You don’t have to plan every detail in September.

But getting the big things on your calendar now can prevent that awful feeling of realizing you scheduled three things for the same Saturday.

🎁 9. Keep a Few “Emergency Gifts”

This is one of those little tricks that can save you every year.

Keep two or three easy gifts tucked away for those unexpected situations.

Maybe it’s a candle, cute mug, gift card, cozy blanket, beauty set, gourmet treat, or another universally useful gift.

Then when someone unexpectedly gives you a gift—or your child tells you at 8 PM that they need something for their teacher tomorrow—you aren’t starting from zero.

Holiday emergency avoided. 🙌

💕 10. Remember: You Don’t Have to Do Everything

This might be the most important reminder.

The holidays aren’t supposed to be a three-month performance where moms exhaust themselves trying to create perfection for everyone else.

You don’t have to make every recipe.

Attend every event.

Buy every gift.

Create an elaborate Elf scene every night.

Decorate every corner of your house.

Or recreate everything you see on social media.

Pick the traditions your family actually loves.

Simplify the rest.

And whenever you can…

ask for help.

🎄 A Little Preparation = A Lot More Enjoyment

That’s really what starting early is about.

It’s not about rushing Christmas.

It’s about protecting December.

Because wouldn’t it be nice to reach the holiday season and actually enjoy it?

To watch the Christmas movie instead of shopping during it.

To drink the hot chocolate instead of reheating it three times while wrapping presents.

To sit with your kids.

Drive around and look at Christmas lights.

Bake the cookies.

Listen to the music.

And actually be present for the memories you’re working so hard to create. 💕

Start small.

Make the list.

Buy the hard-to-find gift.

Pick up a roll of wrapping paper.

Grab a stocking stuffer.

Do one little thing today that makes December easier.

Your future Christmas self will be so glad you did. 🎄🎁💕
